It was definitely our International Dana Group’s pleasure to collaborate with Penang Family Health Development Association (FHDA) to distribute free medications and vital signs assessment in the recent Health Screening Programme for Refugees in Urban Slum in Penang, Malaysia.
We are very proud of our committee member Dr Chee Peng Hor who took the initiative to collaborate with FHDA in this programme. The medications that we donated included paracetamol (tablets and syrup), chlorpheniramine, benadryl, oral rehydration salts, syrup albendazole and shampoo for head lice treatment.
Let’s hear what Dr Hor experienced in this programme:
“ I joined this programme, as a volunteer doctor, on 24.10.2020 between 12- 5 pm at Ujong Batu, Bagan Dalam, Butterworth. This health screening programme took place in a family home offered by Mr Kassim’s family, a house he rented. It is a simple place to set up three stations- one for registration, one for vital signs assessment cum medication dispensary, while another one for medical review. We provided medical review with referral and simple medications for up to 13 families. Many of the women were pregnant and encountered financial challenges in antenatal bookings up to delivery. More than 80% were unbooked for antenatal care. Some women experienced occasional domestic violence. Post-natal women were offered contraception which they were keen on, showing that they are empowered to decide on their own reproductive health and decision making process. The children were lovely though some of them suffered from poor dental care which will benefit from their referral to dental care. “
Last but not least, we would like to acknowledge the kindness and good acts of Ms Engie and Ms Christine from FHDA in collaborating with Dr Hor representing Dana in this Refugee Health Screening Programme.
